I personally recommend cloning your hard drive when updating to Lion, for instance.
This is incredibly useful for Hackintoshes if your original OS X installation explodes while upgrading, you'll still be able to boot from your clone, and you won't end up having to reinstall your entire operating system. Cloning is making an exact, bootable copy of your main hard drive, onto a separate hard drive or hard drive partition.
